The present invention provides a process for the preparation of a compound of the formula (O): <CHEM> wherein R<0> is -SCH2CH2NH2 which process comprises the reaction of a cleavable ester of a compound of the formula (O) wherein R<0> is H with an optionaiiy protected compound XCH2CH2NH2 wherein X is a displaceable group.
