The power-assisted motor vehicle steering system comprises a simulator (6) in the connection between the steering wheel (1) and the steering linkage to provide a turning moment which tends to return the wheel (1) to its mid-position and which increases with increasing speed. The wheel (1) is coupled to the simulator via a torsionally resilient element (10), which may be a visco-elastic coupling. A viscous rotary damper (11) may be arranged in parallel (as shown) with the element, or in series behind the element.
