[Also in Division B5] Machines are constructed for gradually breaking up a mass of cereal or leaf crop by paring a sliver from the edge of a heap or mass lying on a rotating surface. In the embodiment of Fig. 1, a cylindrical container 12 has a rotating bottom 5 rising conically to the centre and carrying radial ribs 6. A horizontal circular saw 18 cuts into the rotating mass to define the upper edge of the sliver, separation being assisted by the adjustable deflector bar 19. A vertical circular saw 16 penetrates the rotating mass tangentially at a window 15 in the wall of the container to pare off the sliver which is removed by a conveyer 17. An adjustable flap 12b is provided. The saw blade 16 carries a tapered guide rim 16a of smaller diameter overlapping the adjacent vertical wall of the container to prevent clogging. The wall of the container may be lower at the side opposite the window and an optionally tiltable loading platform 14 provided. The circular saws may be replaced by chain or band saws or cutter bars. In the modification of Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the horizontal saw is omitted and a set of horizontally reciprocated prongs (28) are provided to force the material against the vertical saw (16) which is set substantially radially to the heap. In a further embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown), a fixed blade (34), preferably serrated, is used and the horizontal prongs (28) are supplemented by a set of vertically reciprocated prongs situated on the opposite side of the blade.</p> |
