Two clamps hold the ends of the spring at an adjustable distance from one another for the purpose of measuring its resilience. Each clamp consists of two plates with 'V' shaped notches facing each other to provide a square opening. The edges of the 'V' notches are bevelled to produce knife edges which extend in a plen perpendicular to the spring axis so that they engage into the coils of the spring. The plates re made of thin sheet material and their bevelled surfaces are at an angle to the spring axis. The knife edges have their bevelled surfaces facing inwards towards the centre portion of the spring. The clamps are displaced by half a coil turn relative to each other.
