The device comprises a cell which contains, in a liquid medium, a suspension of particles, for example of quinine bisulphate periodide, which orient themselves under the influence of an electric field so as to modify the transmission of radiation through the suspension. In order to prevent or retard the agglomeration of the particles in suspension, an ester of a phenol and of a carboxylic acid, for example phenyl acetate, is incorporated into the liquid medium.
