[Also in Divisions D1-D2] A felting needle is formed with barbs 20 by supporting the needle 16 on a fixed die 36 and pressing it with a die 40 which is moved by simultaneously imparted vertical and horizontal force components. During the vertical stroke of the upper die 40, moved by an hydraulic press, a wedge member 44 simultaneously imparts a horizontal force to the die 40 as it presses the needle 16 against the lower die 36. The edges of the barbs 20 are rounded to avoid cutting the fibres and three barbs may be formed simultaneously along each edge of a triangular section blade 16. The blade 16 may alternatively be of round, square &c. section. The protrusion 26 may be skewed relative to the longitudinal axis of the needle 16 (Fig. 7, not shown), and the size of and the distance between the barbs 20 may differ. |
