The derivatives have a 4R-1-piperazinyl radical, optionally substituted on the C atoms by lower alkyl groups, in the 3-position, in which R represents a radical of the formula (III). In this formula, the radicals Z1-Z3 together with the common C atom denote selected saturated or unsaturated, branched or cyclic hydrocarbon radicals optionally halogenated in at most one benzene ring, Z' and Z'' denote H or lower alkyl, Z'' with Z3 also denotes a double bond and n = 0 or 1. The process consists in the reaction of rifamycin S with a 4R-piperazine and isolation of the process products in quinone or in hydroquinone form or in the form of the salts. The process products are high quality antibiotics, in particular against tubercle bacilli. <IMAGE>
