A positioning device for garment pieces on a sewing machine has a conveyor belt feed and a pivoting lever above the machine supporting a gripping device for the piece. Detection means are provided for the arrival of the garment piece under the sewing machine head. Pieces pass through successive work posts by conveyor and belt feed. The front end of the seam line passes under the presser foot. Precise positioning is effected by the detection means (a photo-electric cell) for slowing down the work movement, and a gripping means for the fabric comprising a column and a lever with a suction device connected to a vacuum source by the supple tube. A device is provided which automatically corrects the position of a garment piece for the placing of a seam.
