C2C [Also in Division B1] In a process for the production of formaldehyde by oxidation of methanol with an oxygen-containing gas at 200‹ to 400‹ C. in the presence of a catalyst containing metal oxides, the methanol and oxygen-containing gas are mixed outside the reaction zone containing the catalyst with at least some of the reaction product coming directly from the reaction zone and at least some of the resulting mixture is passed directly into the reaction zone for reaction. The temperature may be controlled by cooling the reaction product which is to be mixed with the methanol and oxygen-containing gas, e.g. with water or with the reactant stream.
