The spectacle lens (2) edge grinder comprises a grinding disc (10) and a lens holder which is rotatable. At the same time the holder is movable in an axial direction (6) to keep the edge of the out-of-round lens in correct alignment when grinding a facetted (at 9) edge. The horizontal axial movement of the lens is provided by a cylinder actuator (12,13) controlled by a signal generated by a nozzle (7,7a). This blows air on to the front of the lens at a point (8) adjacent to the disc contact area (9). The nozzle(s) may be arranged parallel to the lens axis and may be axially adjustable.
