A thread braking element on the circumference of a rotating disk forming part of a mechanism for gripping a running weft thread, comprises a band on the circumference of the disk which is partly enclosed by a curved clamping bracket. The band is produced from a material which has a greater coefft. of friction relatively to the weft thread than that of the material of the clamping bracket. Pref. the angle alpha over which the band and the clamping bracket engage with each other, is adjustable so that the period during which the thread is gripped can be varied. In the clamping bracket and fitted to a frame a pair of pulleys carry a gripping belt. These are arranged so that their spacing can be altered and the angle alpha over which the gripping belt and the band engage can be varied. The pulleys are positioned in a curved slot in the bracket. Used for the control of the running weft thread in an undulating shed loom. The device is simple and the inertia of the loom as a whole is minimalised, whilst it is more reliable and is easily maintained.
