Olefin polymerisation using catalyst - prepn. from magnesium, and titanium cpds., aluminium halide and hydrocarbon solvent giving polymer with no vitreous zone

An olefin is polymerised in presence of a catalyst system comprising an organoaluminium cpd. and a solid catalyst which is insoluble in hydrocarbons. The catalyst system is prepd. by treating a hydrocarbon soln. contg. a Mg cpd. and a Ti cpd. with an Al halide of formula AlR'lX'3-l, where R' is (cyclo)alkyl or aryl, X' is halogen and l is 1-2. Improvement comprises the use of Mg cpd. of formula Mg(OR2)mX2(2-m), (where R2 is (cyclo)alkyl or aryl, X2 is halogen and m is 1 or 2) and of a Ti cpd. of formula Ti(OR3)nX3(4-n) where R3 is (cyclo)alkyl or aryl, X3 is halogen and n is 1, 2 or 3). Used partic. for polymerising ethylene opt. with another alpha-olefin. The catalyst system has high activity and productivity of polymer is increased. The polymer has extremely narrow mol.wt. distribution and does not exhibit vitreous zones.
