<p>Sulphoxides of the formula (where R1 is an aliphatic radical, R2 is an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic radical and X is OH or amino) are prepd. by reacting R2-S-R1-X with an oxidant (pref. O2 or its mixtures with inert gases) under the action of light (pref. visible or UV light) in the presence of a photosensitizer (e.g. rose Bengal, phloxine, protoporphyrin acid dimethyl ester and methylene blue) and of a non-polar solvent (e.g. BuOAc, THF, CHCl3, EtOAc, cyclohexane, Me2CO, ethylene chloride, PhMe, octene, dioxan). Yields are good and products are obtained in pure state. The products are useful as surfactants, antioxidants, odorants and aromatics, as well as intermediates for surfactants, odorants, antioxidants, dyes, solvents and parasiticides.</p> |
