A connector (10) is connected to an endoscope (14) through a universal cord (13) into which a light guide (12) is inserted. A socket (40) is fixed to a housing (20) to receive the connector (10). A light is emitted from a lamp (22) and, after reflected on a reflective mirror (30), transmitted into a distal end (12a) of the light guide (12) which extends from the socket (40). The lamp (22) is connected through a dimmer circuit (26) to a power source (28) and a relay switch (24) is provided between the lamp (22) and the dimmer circuit (26). The relay switch (24) is opened and closed by a solenoid (60) which is connected to a power source (62) through a detector (64).
