PURPOSE:To prepare an aromatic amino compound, economically, by the selective reduction of the nitro group of an aromatic nitro compound in an organic solvent containing an alcohol and/or water using stannous chloride and sodium borohydride as reducing agents. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic nitro compound, especially a compound of formula I (R is H, halogen, alkoxycarbonyl, alkyl, CN, alkylcarbonyl, acyloxy, alkoxycarbonylallyl, or ketoxime; n is 1 or 2) is reduced with sodium borohydride and stannous chloride in an organic solvent containing an alcohol and/or water. The molar ratio of sodium borohydride to stannous chloride is pref. 1:5-1:20. The process enables the selective reduction of the nitro group of an aromatic nitro compound to amino group without affecting the other functional groups, and gives the objective aromatic amino compound, especially the compound of formula II, economically. |
