The electrode according to the invention consists of an electricity conducting solid of anodic oxide film forming metal, which is coated with an active mass, which in weight percent contains 10-75 percent silicon dioxide, 5-45 percent oxides of platinum group metals and 5-45 percent of anodic oxide film forming metals. The electrode can be used as an anode for the production of chlorine and sodium hydroxide and for carrying out the electrolytic process for the production of chlorates and hypochlorites.
