F2 and FSO2CF2CF2OCF(CF3)CF2OCF: CF2 (I) were prepd., and part or all of the OCF2CF2SO2X [X = halogen, OH, alkyl or OZ (Z = a metal) ammonium, aryl or alkyl) groups were converted to OCF2CO2M (M = H, ammonium or a metal) to prep. cation exchange membranes useful for the electrolysis of NaCl to give NaOH and Cl. The copolyemr of F2C: CF2 and I was used to prep. a membrane and a carboxy-contg. membrane gave 95% current efficiency during use as an electrolysis diaphragm in the elctrolysis of NaCl
