The proposed machine is intended to make efficient use of heat sources having temperatures in the range 40 to 120 degrees Celsius. The rotor (R) consists of a cylindrical disc constructed from ferromagnetic laminations (3) shaped and spaced to give ducts for the passage of the heating and cooling media. The lamination material is chosen to exhibit the Curie effect in the temperature range of interest. The laminations are held by a non-magnetic hub. The stator (S) has sets of magnetic pole pairs (9) evenly spaced around its perimeter. Between each pole set are inlets (8) for the hot and cold media. A lamination set approaching a pole pair is cooled, and magnetic attraction between it and the stator causes the rotor to turn. In the vicinity of the poles hot fluid is introduced and the laminations take on a much higher reluctance and the attraction effects are greatly diminished. At this point, a neighbouring pole pair becomes active to maintain the rotation. The use of laminations gives a higher effective density of active material.
|
