The water-cooled piston engine has a cylinder head with water chambers, mounted on the top of the cylinder block. The water chambers (7) in the head (2) are completely closed apart from the water inlets and outlets, and the top face (5) of the block (1) is interrupted only by the cylinder bores (3), being in direct metallic contact with the underside (6) of the head. The thicknesses of the cylinder walls (13) and of the wall (14) forming the block top face are such that cooling is effected solely by heat conductivity through them to the water circulating in the head.
