A bank cheque processing machine has an automatic feed (23) and a manual feed (17). Information keyed in at keyboard (11) is inscribed on the cheque by an MICR inscriber within the machine. The cheques are fed through MICR reader behind the keyboard either to a hold and view window (19), and then via the inscriber, a printer and an endorser, or to a high speed path, so as to reach a transition station where they are oriented from vertical to horizontal, prior to being delivered upwardly and then horizontally to a selected horizontal sorting pocket in one of two stackers (21).
