Shoes are made by fastening together a pair of moulded panels (e.g. of rubber) each of which has a relatively hard or stiff zone to offer side support to the wearer's foot or heel and a relatively soft zone allowing flexibility at or above the ankle. The edges of the panels are butted to a stiff (metal) plate and stuck between a soft (plastic) inner sole and a (moulded) wear sole. Panels moulded with integral differential stiffness are cheaper alternative to complex assemblies of stitched leather panels, and also relatively light, waterproof and rot-proof. Various sizes of shoe may be made from one pair of upper panel patterns.
|
