PURPOSE:To enable infrared rays up to about 10mum wavelengths to be transmitted with low losses by constituting an infrared ray transmitting body with a fibrous single crystal of fluoride of >=17.4 in reduced mass. CONSTITUTION:There are, for example, lead fluoride, bismuth fluoride, thorium fluoride, etc. as the fluoride of >=17.4 in reduced mass, and the former two in particular are suited. For example, lead fluoride is melted and a fibrous single crystal of about 0.5mm.X0.2mm. in section is made by a pulling method. This is cut to 1m length and is inserted into a polyethylene tube of 1mm. inside diameter. This can transmit CO2 gas laser light of 10.6mum wavelength. A single crystal fiber having a section of about 0.3mm.X0.15mm. pulled up from the melt of bismuth fluoride can transmit infrared rays of 5mum wavelength for more than 5m. Hence, these infrared ray transmitting bodies can transmit infrared rays up to about 10mum wavelengths with low losses. |
