<p>Bond between (a) a reinforcing agent, and (b) a plastic matrix, is improved by treating the surface of the reinforcing agent with (c) >=1 organic cpd. of Zr(IV) or Sn(IV), at 250-650 degrees C, applying onto the treated surface, at a lower temp., (d) a silanic bonding agent, and drying the treated material. Reinforcement esp. consists of glass fibres; with heat-hardening resins the amt. is esp. 20-70 wt. %; with thermoplastics, the amt. is 10-50 wt. %. Plastics matrix may be a vinyl chloride (co)polymer, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyamides, unsatd. polyesters, epoxy resins, urea- or melamine-HCHO resins, phenolic resins, polycarbonates, styrene copolymers and thermoplastic polyesters. Cpd. nc) may be M(OZ)4, (where M is Zr or Sn, and OZ is a radical which is not hydrolysed by water at room temp., but is hydrolysed by steam at 250-650 degrees C.</p> |
