<p>An apparatus for dispensing and opening envelopes, particularly retort pouches. A magazine unit holds a pack of envelopes and advances them for feeding. A feeding unit picks the envelopes one-by-one from the magazine by engaging a first wall and presents them to an opening unit. The opening unit engages the other wall of each envelope and separates it from the first wall to open its mouth. Actuating and timing mechanism triggered by the operator reaching for an envelope initiates the operation and performs a cycle of picking up, opening, and releasing. Preferred means for opening the envelope employs opposed arrays of resilient cups at the respective sides of the envelope in which at least one cup of each array is vacuum activated and at least one other cup is passive serving to hold the envelope against the active cup on the other side.</p> |
