Aromatic alkyl carbamates (I) are prepd by reacting an aromatic nitro cpd. a monovalent aliphatic alcohol and CO in the presence of a complex consisting of a halide of Pt-gp metal and an N-contg. heterocycle. A metal oxide accelerator, esp. Fe molybdate or MoO3, may also be present. (I) are intermediate (by pyrolysis) for aromatic isocyanates. Process gives high yields with relatively low pressures and amts. of catalyst. The mixt. does not cause corrosion of the reactor.
