1501636 Locks for steering columns L & F WILLENHALL Ltd 25 Sept 1975 [8 Oct 1974] 43590/74 Heading E2A A lock for a vehicle steering column comprises a body, a bolt 22, a key receiving member e.g. plate tumbler barrel 19, rotatable on insertion of a key, and a cam 24 rotating with the key-receiving member to displace the bolt e.g. via the head 26 of the bolt, wherein; the body comprises a first component 10 and a second component 11 which together define a chamber 12 containing the key-receiving member, the cam and part of the bolt; the key-receiving member and the bolt 22 are mounted in the first component 10; and the second component 11 defines a cavity forming part of the chamber and containing, at least in part, the cam and bolt. A shaft 27 coupled to the cam 24 may drive an electric switch. The cam, barrel, shaft, bolt and first component 10 are first operatively assembled, then a head of the barrel 19 is inserted in an aperture 18 of the second component and a portion 20 of the first component is inserted in an aperture 16 of the second, Fig. 2 (not shown). In operation the barrel, once turned to release the bolt, is movable axially against the force of a spring biassed plunger 32, so that a detent 33 is slid under the head 26 of the bolt to keep it disengaged until the key is returned to its entry position, while the key is moved to further positions e.g. to operate the ignition switch. |
