1354359 Heat treatment ELECTRO-FOOD AB 26 May 1971 [28 May 1970] 17320/71 Heading A2D [Also in Division H5] In a method of treating a packaged product, preferably a comestible, by the passage of an electric current therethrough whereby the electric current is supplied by at least two electrodes via an electrolyte surrounding the product, the treatment is maintained until the product has reached a desired temperature. The treatment may take the form of a sterilisation, or a thawing of a frozen product. The package, during the above treatment, may be sealed or open. In the former case, the electrodes may be metal foil coated on to the inside surfaces of the package, and may have contact surfaces connected to an outside source of current. Also in this case, the package may be perforated and placed in an electrolyte prior to electrical treatment. When an open package is used during the treatment, one or more of the electrodes used may be part of a current supply arrangement, the electrode(s) being placed in the package prior to the commencement of the treatment. The package may be a plastics bag (Fig. 3, not shown) having electrodes in the form of metal foil on its inner surfaces, or the package may be a tin can (Fig. 1) having an insulating shell 1 and a bottom 3 and top 5 of metal. |
