Process takes place in a vertical, externally-heated retort with top feeding of the charge of carbon, ore, fluxes and/or desulphurisers, and redn. gases can be blown in at any height; below the redn. zone is a cooling zone with extractors for sponge iron, surplus carbon and ash. The novelty is the use of (a) a first preheating zone using exhaust gas from the stack and a constant speed of descent of the charge; (b) a second, progressive heating zone using burners, where the redn. starts and the charge descent speed is progressively reduced and (c) a constant hot zone using burners with progressive redn. in the charge descent speed and where the redn. of the ore is completed. Optimum max. temp. is maintained in (c) and part of (b); and the sponge is removed at a constant speed w.r.t. one horizontal cross-section of the shaft. Process allows the use of an externally-heated retort on an industrial scale for mfg. sponge iron.
|
