PURPOSE:To produce the title compound which is used as a starting substance for polyurethane or the like through one-step operation in high selectivity and yield by effecting vapor-phase hydrogenation of di(1-4C)alkyl glutarate in the presence of a copper-chromium system catalyst under specific conditions. CONSTITUTION:Di(1-4C)alkyl glutarate, preferably dimethyl or diethyl glutarate, is subjected to vapor-phase hydrogenation in the presence of a copper-chromium system catalyst such as copper-chromite, Ba-stabilized copper chromite, BaO- activated copper chromite, at 160-240 deg.C, preferably 170-230 deg.C, especially 180-230 deg.C under pressure of 10-70, preferably 15-60, especially 20-60 atmospheric pressure to give 1,5-pentanediol which is useful as a starting substance for unsaturated polyester. The use of the catalyst can produce the diol under relatively mild conditions in high selectivity and high yield. |
