PURPOSE:To manufacture nonwoven fabriclike activated carbon fiber having superior adsorbing capacity and high workability by subjecting nonwoven fabric based on acrylic fiber of very small size to carbonization and activation. CONSTITUTION:Acrylonitrile fiber of <=0.5 denier single fiber size is formed into web by a wet process. This web is superposed on matrix cloth made of acrylic fiber of >=1 denier single fiber size, and they are intertwisted and united in a body by jetting a liq. columnar stream from the web side to obtain nonwoven fabriclike material consisting of 20-100wt% fiber of <=0.5 denier and <=80wt% fiber of >=1 denier. The material is then provided with flame resistance by treatment at 200-350 deg.C in an oxidizing atmosphere, carbonized by heat treatment at <= about 1,300 deg.C, and activated by heat treatment in steam of about 750-900 deg.C. |
