Prodn. of 1,3-diols (I) comprises charging an autoclave, at 0 deg.C and under inert gas, with a catalyst system (A), and then with an unsatd. hydrocarbon (II), an aldehyde and a carboxylic acid in stoichiometric proportions. The mixt. is then reacted at 20-120 deg.C for 5-20 hrs. under sufficient pressure to maintain the mixt. liq. (A) consists of a gp.8 metal salt (esp. a Ru salt) and opt. a pnicogenic ligand (L) and solvent. Specified reactants are butadiene, isoprene, piperylene, cyclopentadiene or styrene (or its 1- or 2-methyl derivs.); (m)ethanal, heptanal or benzaldehyde; and formic, acetic, succinic, adipic and benzoic acids. (I) are useful for making additives (no details) and polycondensates.
