A printing mechanism comprises a printing disc (4) having radial arms (5) of which the free ends are provided with embossed characters (6, 7). These characters (6, 7) are intended to face a printing surface (3) and to come into contact selectively with said surface (3) under the action of a hammer (33). With a view to allowing an easy reading of the last characters typed by a user, the printing mechanism further comprises backing off means (12, 18, 19, 20) to back off the printing disc (4) from the printing surface (3) for any angular position of the disc (4).
