Surface coating of a polycarbonate moulding involves applying a primer (I) and heating and then applying a coating material (II) and hardening, (II) being a hydrolysed partial condensate of an alkyl trialkoxysilane. (I) consists (partly) of a hydrolysed partial condensate of a phenyl trialkoxysilane (IA) of formula PhSi(OR)3 and an alkyl trialkoxysilane (IB) of formula RSi(OR)3 (in which R gps. are 1-4C alkyl) in 1:0-10 (1:0-1, esp. 1:0) molar ratio. Coating has excellent adhesion, transparency and resistance to wear, immersion in hot water, weathering and solvents.
