Prodn. of NaHCO3 and HCl by reacting an aq. NaCl soln. with CO2 under pressure in the presence of an amine and an organic solvent is carried out in the following stages. CO2 under pressure is passed into a mixt. of aq. NaCl soln., a tert. amine and an apolar solvent and the phases are sepd. The aq. phase, after sepg. pptd. NaHCO3 and concn. with NaCl is recycled to the first stage. The organic phase(s) is heated and the HCl liberated is removed. The process is economical and environmentally advantageous and HCl is produced under milder and simpler conditions than in a previous process and can also be obtd. in anhydrous form.
