Biological treatment of waste water - using suspended plastic bodies with microbial growth on their surfaces and air injection

The water is recirculated through a trough with an expanding conical section in which are suspended a quantity of support bodies. These have expanded surfaces on which are a layer of microorganisms. Air is also bubbled through the trough to ensure good oxygenation. The support bodies are freely suspended in the water/gas stream to give a stable dispersion. They are supported in the form of a fluidised bed. The process is to treat aq. effluent streams esp. where the suspended solids content is high. The process combines the advantages of activated sludge process and the trickle tower process while avoiding their disadvantages. Thus it gives excellent contact with the problem of flotation being avoided and also avoiding the problem of anaerobic fermentation as can occur on the trickle tower.
