PURPOSE:A homologation reaction using p-methylbenzylalcohol, hydrogen and carbon monoxide is effected in the presence of a cobalt-rhodium catalyst at a specific temperature and pressure to produce the titled compound used as an intermediate for agricultural chemicals. CONSTITUTION:2-(p-Methylphenyl)ethanol is produced by the reaction between p- methylbenzylalcohol, hydrogen and carbon monoxide in the presence of a cobaltrhodium catalyst consisting of e.g., cobalt sulfate or cobalt nitrate and rhodium halide or rhodium nitrate at a pressure of at least 50, preferably 50-400, much preferably 100-300 atmospheric pressure and a temperature of 100-200, preferably 120-150 deg.C. As a cocatalyst, a compound of iron, nickel or ruthenium, an iodine compound or bromine compound is used. Water is added to the liquid starting materials containing p-methylbenzylalcohol by 15wt% at most. |
