A vulcanising and cross-linking apparatus for elongated rubber and/or plastics products such as cable coatings and the like uses radiant heat inside a long vulvanisation tube containing inert gas and elongated resistance heating elements. The resistance heating elements are long strips laid parallel to the axis of the vulcanisation tube on its internal face or on a coating of that face. The resistance elements (12) are of chromium, bronze, brass, copper or alloys of these. Used for the dry vulcanisation under inert gas of long products such as cables, etc. By dividing the vulcanisation section into a series of flanged tubes, each insulated from the others, each section can be independently supplied, e.g. from the secondary side of a transformer; this enables the entire thermal control of the process to be very easily carried out.
