The backrest (1) comprises a frame (5) made of a rigid material fitted on its upper (4) and lower (5) webs with substantially parallel strips (9) of a resilient material which are curved out from the plane of the frame towards the seat surface (2). The resilient bands run from top to bottom down the back of the patient and have a resetting force so that they have a two-fold effect. They form a back support which adapts to each individual patients and can be adjusted by a change in position and they produce a massage effect when the back is moved thus counteracting muscle strains. The strength of the curvature of the bands can be adjusted in various ways, e.g. by altering the height of the backrest.
