Polyacrylamide is prepd. by acrylamide polymerisation in an aq. basic soln. contg. a redox system. Novelty consists of carrying out polymerisation in the presence of highly dispersed SiO2 opt. modified by grafting the surface with 0.4-0.9 mmol/g diethylene glycol-, dimethyl-silylene-, aminoethoxy-, phenyl aminomethylene-methyl-diethoxy- or butoxy gps. The polyacrylamide is used in finishing textiles. A pasty polyacrylamide is obtd. which easily dissolved in water. Polyacrylamide storage stability is increased from 6 months to 1-1.5 years. The finished textiles are given the required stiffness and full hand and have improved abrasion-resistance and soil-repellency.
