Packing type for mass transfer columns etc. consists of a coiled crimped plastic strip. It is pref. made from a polyfluorinated hydrocarbon. Packing is formed by a rotating knife which cuts the strip from a plastic rod. Type of crimp, the tightness of the coil, etc. are determined by the plastic characteristics. Angle of cut of the knife and the rate of advance of the cutter. Ratio of the shortest side to total length of each item is not less than 5. Number of crimps in the strip per turn in the coil should not be less than 2. Surface can be etched with adhesive to generally improve adhesion and rigidity. Cutter can be vibrated to increase the crimp effect in the coil. Coil can be further modified by adjusting the extrusion on one edge compared with the other.
