The locking device is intended for herring-bone-shaped milking parlours and has a number of restraint apertures in a partition with fodder at its bottom edge, reached by the animal only be passing its head through the aperture. One aperture side is bounded by a restraint element which can pivot between a free and restraining position. A sensor detects the passage of the head through the restraint aperture. The swivel axis (3) of the restraint element (16) is inclined to the horizontal and is typically vertical.
