The applicator surface may be smooth or patterned, may be on a roller or endless belt, and may be advanced by a cam or solenoid against the action of a spring. The automatic action may be effected by a series of cog wheels. The developer may be a polar or non-polar liquid developer or a dry powder developer. As shown, a patterned applicator roll 16 in a movable unit 10 operated by a cam 35 is supplied by a feed roll 17 and has a pair of corner doctors 18 and a main doctor 20. Doctoring may alternatively be effected by a further roll, Fig.2 (not shown), or by the feed roll itself, Fig.3 (not shown). |
