Corrugated at least partly thermoplastic pile yarns are bonded to an at least partly thermoplastic backing by the energy of sonic or ultra-sonic vibrations. A thermoplastic backing 26 is fed intermittently by a conveyor 24 and a roll 22 that acts as an anvil and is situated beneath a horn 14 that is ultrasonically vibrated by a vibrator 10 and is movable vertically by pneumatic cylinders 19 to bond corrugated pile material 30 to the backing 26. The pile material is fed through tubes 28 in a member 27 that is reciprocated horizontally when the horn 14 is still in contact with the pile, to draw out fresh tuft lengths. A number of horns may be arranged endwise and the member 27 may be reciprocated different amounts to draw out different tuft length. The tufts may also be fed positively through the tubes 28 by a pattern mechanism which provides tufts of different lengths. The pile may be cut or uncut and other means may be used to corrugate the pile, e.g. a conveyor of blades operating with a presser blade. The vibrator may also be stationary and the anvil movable. Various embodiments of materials for the backing and pile yarns are given. |
