A roller for heating or cooling webs comprises a chamber 6 for the heating or cooling medium between inner and outer cylindrical shells 1, 2 and means between and adjacent the ends of the shells are expansible into contact with the shells to centre the outer shell and to seal the ends of the chamber. As shown, arcuate tubes 21, 24 between flanges 17, 18, 19 are inflated into contact with the shells. The tube 24 is annular and seals the chamber whilst the tube 21 is formed of a number of arcuate sections which may be inflated to different pressures to centre the shell 2. The shell 2 may be supported intermediate its ends by an additional tube 29. Inlet and outlet ducts 7 are provided and a duct 31 by-passes the tube 29. In Figs. 1-3 (not shown) a rubber annulus (9) between the shells (1, 2) is compressed axially by tightening a nut (13) to expand the rubber into engagement with the shells. In Figs. 7-9 (not shown) split rings (33, 34) are urged into engagement with the shells (1, 2) on axial movement of a wedge (42), effected by tightening a screw (44). A sealing ring (47) is provided between a back-plate (46) and the split rings (33, 34). |
