The filter tube consists of a housing (1) with a built-in fire extinguisher (2) for cigarettes, such that the smouldering of the cigarette (6) is extinguished when the latter contacts a non-flammable, fire-extinguishing part (ring 2) of the housing (1). The tip of the filter tube has a filter (4) and the non-flammable fire-extinguishing ring (2) is designed as a cigarette holder. A cigarette (6) which is to be smoked can be ejected from the housing (1) in a manner such that the fire-extinguishing ring (2) comes to rest on that point of the cigarette (6) where the smouldering is to be extinguished. The cigarette therefore burns only to the selected length and thus constitutes no fire hazard. <IMAGE>
