A process for the preparation of daunomycin and analogues thereof of the formula I in which the substituents have the meanings stated in Claim 1 is described and entails starting from a racemic mixture of aglycones of the formula II, which are converted in a stereospecific manner into (7S:9S)- alpha - and (7R:9R)- beta -glycosides and can then easily be separated by chromatography. <IMAGE>
