Process for the preparation of bis(carbamylguanidine) compounds

By reaction of a bisguanidino compound of formula in which the substituents have the meaning shown in Claim 1, with an isocyanate of formula Z-NCO, the corresponding bis(carbamylguanidine) compounds are obtained. The bisguanidino compound is preferably N,N'-bis(3-guanidinopropyl)piperazine and Z is preferably a 4-chlorophenyl group. The compounds obtained can be used as local antimicrobial agents and more particularly antimicrobial compounds acting against microorganisms which produce dental plaque, having a prolonged intraoral residence time and antimicrobial activity, an acceptable taste, and staining neither the teeth nor the gums.
