Alkane carboxylic acid ester are prepd. by reacting carbon monoxide and a primary or secondary monovalent alcohol with an alkene of formula R1 CHvCHR2 (where R' is hydrogen or straight chain aliphatic radical and R2 is a hydrocarbon radical, R1 and R2 comprising a total of 5 to 18 carbon atoms), the reaction occurring in the presence of a cobalt catalyst and of 0.01-0.125 moles of hydrogen per mole of carbon monoxide, and of pyridine optionally substd. in the 3-positions and/or 4-position by an alkyl (1-4, phenyl or benzyl radical or of quinoline or a reduced quinoline optionally substd. by alkyl groups, the reaction taking place at 110-220 degrees C under a pressure of at least 50 atomspheres. The esters may be used as mineral oil additives, as lubricants, plasticizers, as soaps or converted into glycerides which are emulsifying agents and cold-resistant plasticizers. |
