Apparatus for coating a conductive filament 10 with an element by deposition from a gaseous phase reaction mixture comprises a series of interchangeable cells defined by tubular members 1 which are inter-connected and terminated by structures 2 of insulating material each containing a passage 5 such that a filamentary support may be passed through said cells and said structures on a rectilinear path, these passages tapering towards their ends to retain a liquid seal therein and communicating with an inlet 6 for the supply of liquid (e.g. Hg) to said passages, the arrangement being such that filament may be heated by electrical resistance via the liquid seals. Inlets and outlets for gas 8 and 9 respectively may be provided in structures 2, which are a gas-tight force fit with cells 1. The first cell may be used as a cleaning vessel, a suitable gas being passed therethrough, and subsequent cells may be for coating, e.g. B on a W filament from a BCl 3 /H 2 mixture. The temperature of the filament may be monitored and controlled electrically, a suitable circuit being described. |
