The invention provides a process for the heat treatment of strap coils made of metals, wherein electrodes are connected to the strap coil, by means of which direct or alternating current of a voltage of 0.01 to 0.25 V/turn and of an intensity of 1.000-10.000 A is supplied to the strap coil, the values of voltage and intensity, respectively, being regulated in dependence of the common insulation resistance of the lubricant, the oxide layer and the air gap, after having heated the coil to 750.degree.C and after a certain holding time the coil is cooled by natural and/or artificial cooling.
